Serra Dourada Stadium
Goiânia, Brazil 2025The iconic Serra Dourada Stadium, designed by Paulo Mendes da Rocha and inaugurated in 1975, is a landmark of Brazilian modern architecture applied to sports facilities. In the original conception, the architect proposed two fundamental strategies: the creation of a large transitional space — a “vestibule” — that breaks with the idea of the stadium as a closed volume, and an opening along the main axis, allowing flexible uses beyond football, such as events and concerts. This approach expands the role of the stadium within the city, transforming it into an active public space. The reinforced concrete structure is the protagonist of the project, with large spans and cantilevers defining the grandstand roof and giving the complex both lightness and monumentality. In an innovative move, only part of the roof performs the traditional function of shelter; the other half forms an external circulation ring, level and oriented toward the city, reinforcing the relationship between the building and its urban surroundings. BCMF is honored to be working on the redevelopment of Serra Dourada, facing the challenge of updating the facility to meet contemporary demands while preserving the structural and spatial principles that define its architectural identity.
Alongside the Government of Goiás and in partnership with Construcap, BCMF Arquitetos is leading the redevelopment of the Serra Dourada Complex, shaping the future of one of the greatest icons of Brazilian architecture, originally designed by Paulo Mendes da Rocha.
The proposal seeks to balance the preservation of the stadium’s original architectural strength with its adaptation to contemporary demands.
The intervention enhances the existing structure and its exposed concrete expression, acting with precision and without unnecessary additions. The central strategy focuses on reorganizing circulation flows and improving operational efficiency, with clearer and independent access routes for different user groups.
The spectator experience is also transformed through the lowering of the playing field and the expansion of the lower tier, bringing the audience closer to the action. New uses, including premium suites and hospitality areas, reinforce the venue’s multifunctional character, enabling it to host not only sporting events but also cultural activities and large-scale entertainment events.
At the urban scale, the project strengthens integration with its surroundings and upgrades the external public areas, incorporating references to the Cerrado landscape into the overall environment. Accessibility improvements and infrastructure modernization further complement the proposal.
The collaboration between our firm and the concessionaire has already been successfully established through the redevelopment of Mineirão Stadium in Belo Horizonte—an architectural project by BCMF in partnership with Construcap, which is also responsible for the management of Ibirapuera Park in São Paulo.
With construction scheduled to begin in 2026, the project reaffirms its commitment to transforming the Serra Dourada Complex into a contemporary, active, and city-integrated destination, prepared to reach a new standard of sports, culture, and leisure.
