In this case, the four marks have a constant proportion in relation to the void. The subtle orientation change of one of the four marks (which one?) on the clean surface of the carpet plays with our tendencies to percieve certain symmetries instead of other possible ones. Depending on how we “readjust” the mark, we can get a concentric, centrifugal, longitudinal, transversal or even a diagonal composition. The inattentive eye usually assumes the most obvious symmetry, and sometimes doesn’t even acknowledge the small positioning “error”. The big flat surface reinforces the quality of the wool and its nuances in tone.
